I've done a lot of crazy things in my life.
Opening an immigration practice at 29 years old, in January 2025, is probably the craziest.
Lawyer had never once crossed my list of "dream jobs." As my undergraduate career quickly approached its end, I was forced to face reality. I was too young to be President. Even worse, true wallpaper paste was a thing of the past - interior decorator flew out the door.
It all came to a head during the most awkward mandatory undergraduate career center meeting to ever be had
"So . . . what are your plans post graduation?"
"Immigrants"
It flew out of my mouth, as if it had been waiting forever to finally be acknowledged.
My gramma, the crazy lady who raised me and my best friend was a Polish immigrant. I tutored Somali Bantu second graders for years, and was welcomed fully into the Buffalo Somali community.
Duh.
I bit the bullet and spent the three years of law school praying for a fast forward button, and started a legal assistant role with a local immigration nonprofit my first year.
The saga between that point and now could be its own novel. Short to say, I'm still here.
So many people ask lately: "Do you hate it?" "Are you going to quit?" "Don't you have other options?"
My answer has and always remain the same.
I'm not sure there's another job in the world where every single day offers a moment where to witness a person who has experienced the absolute worst humanity could even imagine makes the conscious choice to choose kindness over it all. The gentleness, concern, understanding, brilliance, and patience of my clients are the reason I can continue on in the current state of insanity.
They remind me, without fail, that the choice always exists. That evil, no matter the level it may reach, can always be met with unwiring commitment to kindness. That we can be brave in the face of anything that may come. And that I have the obligation to follow the lead of those who inspire me most.
We will make it through, my friends. You are far from alone. Always aspire to be kind, not nice.

A natural "helper," Grant has dedicated his career to serving others. Grant joins Hatfield Immigration after an extensive career in pro bono health care services, during which he served in roles ranging from one on one work with clients to writing and managing grant funding.
After a decade of witnessing underserved and ignored populations within the American healthcare system, Grant found himself suddenly immersed in the world of immigration law. Before he knew it, the spark was relit, and he found himself jumping headfirst into an entirely new field.
Grant comes to Hatfield Immigration with a background in mental health and trauma informed care, and hopes to help incorporate more wholistic services to all clients.
